Earth’s magnetic north pole is hurtling toward Russia

(CNN)The north magnetic pole has been drifting so fast that it could be a problem for smartphone maps and navigation systems. The model, which is commissioned by the British and US military agencies, is typically updated every five years, the most recent being in 2015. But the agency explained that the “out-of-cycle update … will ensure safe navigation for military applications, commercial airlines, search and rescue operations, and others operating around the North Pole.” And while the model’s primary user is the military, it has found its way into Google and Apple’s civilian mapping systems. Sony posts strong music earnings, as gaming business disappoints

Sony posted record quarterly earnings this week on the strength of very strong music profits. Those numbers were catapulted thanks to the company’s $2.3 billion acquisition of EMI as part of an ever-consolidating music industry. The electronics giant’s operating profit rose to $3.46 billion for the quarter — up from $3.21 billion a year prior, marking the highest single-quarter profit for the company. Things were less rosy on the gaming front, however, where the company was hit by declining hardware sales of its mature PS4 consoles for the holiday quarter. The League Against Cruel Sports recorded the footage in Exmoor, Somerset, in December. It claimed the video showed an illegal hunt, and accused Devon and Somerset Stag Hounds of exploiting loopholes in the law to continue hunting. The hunt said it was legally controlling herd numbers, as part of a conservation programme. The Hunting Act has three exemptions which allow a hunt to take place, including research and observation.

Texas Catholic dioceses reveal names of nearly 300 clergy accused of child abuse

(CNN)Every Catholic diocese in Texas has released the names of all priests, deacons and other clergy members accused of sexually abusing children in the past decades. The lists, published on each diocese’s website, include the names of the clergy members, details about when and where they were ordained and which parishes they were assigned to. Each diocese compiled it’s own list and the details about those accused and the allegations vary. While some dioceses noted that some of the accused are linked to ongoing investigations, it’s unclear whether the release of the names could result in criminal charges.
