These Atlanta neighbors no longer wanted to live on Confederate Avenue. Here’s what they did about it

Atlanta (CNN)Tiffany Friesen is still getting used to her new address. Out of habit, she sometimes says she lives on Confederate Avenue, where she and her husband Atiba Mbiwan have been for years. Fifty years later, Friesen and Mbiwan would get involved in an early effort to change the street’s name after nine black churchgoers were massacred at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. “I thought it was time for a change,” Friesen remembered. “I felt like it was indicative of a direction that I hope we’re going in as a nation and as a community.” The couple, who are black, moved into their home on Confederate Avenue after getting married in 2003, despite the name. At first, Mbiwan …

Scientists Reveal How To “Unscience An Animal” In Hilarious And Adorable Twitter Trend

Wonderful as science is, we all know it can get pretty heavy on the jargon. Most scientific papers border on the incomprehensible to people without much familiarity in that field. So zoos online decided to counteract this, coming together under the hashtag #UnscienceAnAnimal to put the anatomy of the species they study into terms everyone can understand, even if the usefulness for research purposes might be open to question. Zoologists, researchers, museums, aquariums, and other people who just love animals, joined in and the results are a delight. Early efforts were fairly basic. – – – Then things got more detailed. – – Some institutions realized the potential of the hashtag to remind the world of endangered species we really …

This Is What Happens If You Use A Supersoaker In Chicago Right Now

America is dangerously cold right now, and you should be doing everything possible to stay as warm, and, you know, alive as possible.  But on the other hand, the polar vortex looks sniggeringly NSFW and let’s face it, snow is quite fun. Case in point: People have been throwing boiling water into the polar vortex to see which will win. Midwesterners have been venturing outside into temperatures as low as -50°F (with wind chill) in order to throw boiling water into the air and watch it freeze before it’s even hit the ground. It’s pretty freaking cool to be honest. – – It’s possible to do this as long as the temperature is below 0.01°C (32.018°F). The water you throw needs to be boiling, …

Wiley The Dalmatian Has A Heart On His Nose And People Are In Love

hi.wiley Wiley found his way to Smith, who lives in Colorado, from Oklahoma on Saint Patrick’s day of last year and while his unique markings make him stand out, she says that’s not the reason she chose him. hi.wiley “He came from a litter of 11, and 8 of them were boys, so I had a tough choice in choosing him. The heart was there, but not fully formed to the point where I believed it would stay since dalmatian spots change so much as they grow. I chose him because the breeder told me that all he did was sleep, snuggle, and eat, so we already had a lot in common.” hi.wiley Well, the sleepy little pup she first …

A not-so-funny story about blackface

(CNN)Some of your favorite comedy stars and “Saturday Night Live” cast members have donned blackface and escaped major criticism for it. “Saturday Night Live” was called out on social media after it aired a skit this past weekend that poked fun at Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s current controversy. There have been calls for Northam to resign over of a racist photo surfaced from his 1984 yearbook page that showed one person dressed in blackface and another in a KKK hood. The governor denied being in the photo, but has said he darkened his skin to mimic singer Michael Jackson for a dance contest in 1984. Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring has also admitted to donning blackface as part of …

What Miracle Max would say about the shutdown

(CNN)Jerry Seinfeld famously joked that Americans are so subservient to our dogs, aliens looking at us through telescopes wouldn’t know which is the higher life form. “If you see two life forms, one of them’s making a poop, the other one’s carrying it for him, who would you assume was in charge?” Just pretend you’re looking at us from the outside. Our government, one of the greatest systems ever crafted by men, designed to navigate a civilization through war and famine and civil unrest, is partially shut down, like a cartoonish scene from a Rob Reiner movie. Nadia Vulvokov is gazing at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. She’s back at her 36th birthday and feeling very WTF, having just died and come back to life and all. Her efforts to unravel what exactly is going on are thwarted, however, when she falls into the East River and drowns. Nadia Vulvokov is ― you get the picture. …

Kindle Fire tricks, giving the slip to Google and more: Tech Q&A

A: If you’re frequenting establishments that are embarrassing, you might want to think about the company you keep – just saying. Still, many people are rightfully concerned about the constant tracking of our devices and lives. After all, why does the tech giant have a right to document our movements and keep that data forever, and how could this possibly benefit the average consumer? Google has lots of explanations, but if you’re concerned about the tracking that your device performs, you can switch this feature off whenever you want. You’ll probably have to since most phones track your movements by default. Tap or click here to stop your phone from being tracked with these settings. Scrub Old Accounts Q: I …

Doctors Tell This Man That He Needs To Wear A Mask To Help Him Breathe So He Turns It Into Alien Facehugger

If you’ve seen the movie Alien, you know how fun facehuggers are. Despite having a name that sounds like a creature that acts mildly too familiar, no one wants to get their faces hugged by these cute-sounding crawling parasitic extraterrestrials. Well, Jared Grey, a sci-fi author, is here to prove otherwise. Since getting diagnosed with sleep apnea, he has to wear a CPAP mask every time he goes to sleep, which facilitates his breathing. He was not too excited by this and described the mask as a “torture machine”. But, being a huge fan of science fiction, he knew exactly what to do. He made the mask look like it was a real-life alien facehugger, resting in its new host. …

A Petition To Sell Montana To Canada For 1 Trillion Dollars Is Gaining Attention With Hilarious Comments

Although it’s no secret that petitions can have the power to change the world (or someone’s life), most of us can’t help but shrug and scoff when we see someone share a rally for signatures on their social media. It’s mostly because the thousands of petitions circulating around usually have causes that are either ridiculous or don’t inspire people enough to move their fingers across the keyboard to sign it. And while examples like Caroline Criado-Perez’s banknote petition or the infamous Californian Recall Election Of 2003 exist, it’s no surprise that some appeals are created not to change the status quo, but to have a good laugh. One of such petitions created on change.org is titled “Sell Montana to Canada …

‘I’m mixed-race, is Cambridge right for me?’

Anoushka Mutanda Dougherty has been offered a place at Cambridge University, but she’s mixed-race and from a state school – and only 3% of students who started at Cambridge in 2017 were black, or mixed-race with black heritage. So is it the best place for her? At this point, she’s not sure. Cambridge is the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world. Cambridge is the fourth-oldest surviving university in the world. Cambridge has produced, so far, 90 Nobel prize winners – and Cambridge, this educational powerhouse, just might not be where I want to go. At least, that’s how I feel right now, a week after finding out that I got a place. Image copyright Getty Images Image caption A student …
