Great news! You’ve been invited on an important business trip with your company, and today’s the first day of an amazing week.
You’ve had a good night’s sleep, you’ve gotten in a few laps at the pool, and you’ve fueled up with La Quinta Inns & Suites™ FREE Bright Side Breakfast®.
You’re hanging out in the lobby when you see your boss and the CEO of your company. They want to introduce you to a very important client—who’s standing right behind them.
For a moment, nerves get the best of you, panic sets in, and you’re convinced that you’ve forgotten your own name.
But breathe: we’ve got you covered. You’ve got this! Here’s a 5-step refresher on nailing that intro:
1. BE COOL
Smile, stand up to greet the client, and get ready to be your awesome self. Be sure to watch your body language. Maintain eye contact while you’re speaking to the client, but don’t let it turn into a staring contest.
2. RELAX, RESPOND, REPEAT
You’ve got just a few moments to establish a great first impression, so relax and keep it simple. Let your boss or CEO introduce you first. Be sure to respond with a pleasantry and repeat the client’s name in conversation if it helps you to remember it, but don’t forget—subtlety is key.
3. PUT ‘ER THERE WITH A FIRM HANDSHAKE
No limp wrists, no wet hands, no fingertip cop-outs. You don’t need to be a bone crusher, but you do want to be confident. A few shakes are good… anything more might turn into a hostage situation.
4. LISTEN FIRST, THEN SPEAK
Let the introducer give you some background info on the client before diving into business. There’s no need to rush it. After all, this could be the start of a beautiful you + client relationship!
5. STRIKE UP A CONVO ORGANICALLY
Be friendly. Ask questions to break the ice, so that you can get to know the client. Make sure to not get too personal (you don’t need to know their social security number) or to not get too mundane (the weather’s just fine). Try finding out about hobbies they enjoy or asking about books they’re reading.
That’s it. The client, your boss, and the CEO are all impressed. You crushed that introduction!
